About Koseki

What is a Koseki?

戸籍 (koseki) — Japan's Family Register System

Japan has maintained detailed family registers since the Meiji era (1868). Each koseki records births, deaths, marriages, addresses, and family relationships — often across 3–5 generations. These records are held by local municipal offices and are only accessible by family members or authorized representatives.

We access these records on your behalf and translate all findings into English.

Through koseki research, we can discover:

  • Your ancestral hometown — prefecture, city, and village
  • Why your family left Japan (emigration story)
  • Original family name before immigration
  • Family members going back 3–5+ generations
  • Living relatives still in Japan today
  • Family crest (家紋 kamon)
  • Regional history and context of your family's era

Yes, that's often enough to begin. The more details you share (name, birth year, home prefecture, emigration year), the more precise our research can be — but we regularly work with incomplete starting information.

Typically 3–6 months from start to delivery. This depends on the complexity of your family history and the availability of records in the relevant regions. We provide regular progress updates.
